The very first dog registered in South Africa (June 1891) was a Wired hair Fox Terrier bitch named Plume. The wire was created by crossing the smooth variety with the rough-coated Black and Tan Terrier. Like the Smooth, the Wire was a hunt terrier whose job it was to go to ground and rout out the fox. He is also an active smart-looking chap, identical to the Smooth in all respects except his coat which should be dense and wiry, like coconut matting. For pets the coat can be machine clippered into a smart shape, but ideally he should be "hand stipped" to preserve the correct coat texture and true colour. The Wire Fox Terrier is extremely lively, a tireless and devoted companion, mischievous but dependeble. A fine watch dog and always ready for a game, he should have a good exercise area and it must be noted that he can be quite sharp with other dogs. (a quotation from Southern Africa's Dog directory 2009)
